Project Vox: Expanding the Philosophical Canon in the Age of AI (2024-2025)

This team asked how marginalized figures in philosophy can be more fully recognized and incorporated into the philosophical canon. Building on Project Vox’s decade-long work, team members researched underrepresented philosophers, produced peer-reviewed website entries, and updated Wikipedia pages to expand access to accurate and inclusive information. The initiative aimed to challenge the dominance of the European, male-centered canon and provide resources for students, teachers and researchers seeking to engage with a more diverse history of philosophy.

Over the past year, the team advanced this mission by updating and expanding website entries, adding missing analyses of philosophical arguments, and locating historically accurate images with proper metadata. They also organized regular Wikipedia edit-a-thons to improve the accuracy and discoverability of entries, which in turn supports global readers and influences AI training datasets. Their work culminated in the 2025 Project Vox 10th Anniversary Symposium, which brought together scholars, students and collaborators to reflect on the project’s impact, share practices for community-based research and chart future directions.

Through these efforts, Project Vox has grown from a small group focused on early modern women philosophers into a global network committed to inclusivity and diversity in philosophy. The project has not only reintroduced neglected thinkers into scholarly discourse but also created collaborative structures where students from varied disciplines play a central role. By combining digital scholarship, public engagement and community-building, the team has helped reshape how philosophy is studied, taught and accessed worldwide.
