Bass Connections Team Is Heading to South Carolina
Starting in December, a new Bass Connections project team in Education & Human Development will ride the ResearchMobile bus down to South Carolina to research and collect data in regions affected by the recent floods.
Up to six students will be trained in data collection and will be making stops in Columbia, Charleston and around Lake Marion. Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to apply.
Flooding costs the United States billions of dollars in damage and response programs every year; South Carolina is the most recent victim of floods, and environmental experts predict that flooding will only increase in the future with the effects of climate change.
Disadvantaged communities often bear a disproportionate burden of disaster, frequently worsening pre-existing inequities. To understand post-disaster resilience and the ways in which communities respond to such events, we must elucidate the dynamic interplay across individuals, households, and communities.
Team members will sift through the data they collect to examine factors such as stress levels, risk perceptions and policy change as a result to flooding tragedies.
