I made connections through my Bass Connections work that are coming full-circle: I’m interacting with some of these same connections now in my new professional capacity, and it’s great to have already established a working relationship with them.

Current Position
Senior Manager of Forests and Climate, American Forests
I am currently working as the Forests and Climate Manager for American Forests, a small forest-focused nonprofit based in Washington, D.C. In my position, I am helping lead the organization’s thinking on forests and climate change, including how to protect forests from future climate impacts and how to use forests as part of the climate solution.
This work is a direct extension of what I studied for my master’s degrees at Duke, and it’s especially relevant to my Bass Connections project. My project team focused on creating policy recommendations to leverage forests and agriculture (collectively called the land base) to reduce our national greenhouse gas emissions and meet our climate goals. My role on our team was to be the forest and climate science expert, which is very similar to the position I now hold at American Forests. I feel much more comfortable in my job because of my Bass Connections project, and I feel very well-prepared for the exciting work I’m doing now.
I also made connections through my Bass Connections work that are coming full-circle: I’m interacting with some of these same connections now in my new professional capacity, and it’s great to have already established a working relationship with them.
Aside from my Master’s Project, Bass Connections was the most challenging and most rewarding experience I had at Duke. I’m incredibly glad that I was able to participate on a project team, and I know that it gave me a valuable set of skills and expertise that I’ll use for the rest of my career.
