Mindfulness in Education and Human Development (2014-2015)
This project team brought together Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill faculty and students, Communities in Schools of Orange County and Y.O.G.A. for Youth staff and teachers for a multiyear quantitative and qualitative research study. Although Y.O.G.A. for Youth has taught over 18,000 young people in its 19-year history, only one research study has been published on the effects of its curriculum, and very little research currently exists in the areas of youth yoga and education and yoga. The project team members’ study analyzed the effects of a regular yoga and meditation practice on middle school students’ stress response by measuring mindful attention awareness levels, sleep quality, health indicators, resiliency, emotions and intrusive thoughts and quarterly academic reports.
