Xiao Recio-Blanco draft
Duke Law alumnus Xiao Recio-Blanco directs the Ocean Program at the Environmental Law Institute (ELI). He reflects on what he gained from his Bass Connections experience.

Exploring the Intersection of Energy and Peace-building through Film was a fun and challenging project. Professor Erika Weinthal did a terrific job managing the project. We had the chance to meet with highly specialized practitioners that have been doing fascinating work on environmental peace-building.
The project team was multidisciplinary, with students from different academic programs and background experience, which I think contributed to prepare me for the kind of working environment I have found in my professional life, working in the non-profit sector.
The project also gave me an opportunity to step out of my usual activities (doing research on environmental law) and do things I had little experience with, like drafting a script for a documentary or thinking about how certain images might help communicate the environmental impact of armed conflict in different regions of the world.
