Specialized Music therapy program helps kids with autism socialize

A Education & Human Development themed project team, Voices Together: Music Therapy and Autism in Elementary Schools, has continued their partnership with a Chapel Hill non-profit to research the use of music in socialization among developmentally disabled children. The multidisciplinary team is currently collecting qualitative and quantitative outcome data in order to fine-tune a special-education curriculum that could potentially be used around the country by music therapists. Therapy sessions are videoed by the Duke students, who then look for behaviors signifying emotional expression or social engagement. These movements are coded into the computer database, then analyzed to confirm that music therapy is resulting in noticeable change in the children's behavior.
