Solarize Duke: Simplifying and Lowering Costs of Solar Installation

The Bass Connections Distributed Solar Generation for Duke University Employees project team is working to help Duke achieve its goal of carbon neutrality by 2024. Part of the Bass Connections Energy theme, the project team encourages Duke employees to install rooftop solar panels in their homes by connecting them with vendors who will perform the installations for a discounted price. The program is able to reduce rates by as much as 65 percent by taking advantage of federal and state solar tax credits and combining them with vendors’ discounts.

Charles Adair, program manager of the Duke Carbon Offsets Initiative, describes the project as “part of a greater effort by Duke to determine how residential solar may provide social and economic benefits to surrounding communities while creating emissions reductions that help to further the university’s carbon neutrality goal.”
