Mapping Opioid Use and Seeking Remedies across North Carolina
Nicole Schramm-Sapyta and Erica Onuoha represented their Bass Connections project team on “The Measure of Everyday Life,” a weekly public radio program highlighting work to improve the human condition.
Schramm-Sapyta is assistant professor of the practice and COO at the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences. She and Andrew Muzyk lead the Bass Connections project team Stemming the Opiate Epidemic through Education and Outreach. Biology major Erica Onuoha ’18 was a team member in 2017-18.
William Simpson of DisposeRx and Mark Edlund of RTI joined them on the episode Mapping Opioid Use, Abuse and Remedies hosted by Dr. Brian Southwell, director of the Science in the Public Sphere Program at RTI International and an adjunct professor at Duke’s Social Science Research Institute.
The episode aired on WNCU on June 3 and is available on the program’s website and iTunes.
I’ve always been interested in mental health, and through this project I was able to learn a lot about substance use, addiction and how policy affects treatment options. And this project for me is also a lot to do with social justice. Addiction is a disease and we have the resources to do something about it. – Erica Onuoha
Team members Katie Kanter ’18 and Madeline Thornton ’18 gave a talk at the Bass Connections Showcase on April 18, and the team presented a poster.
