Making a Difference?
Despite how close she has become with this refugee community in Jordan, Nali Gillespie still questions the scope of her impact.
Gillespie is a student on the Bass Connections project team Displacement, Resettlement and Global Mental Health working in Jordan this summer.
“Even after doing life story interviews for about a year now, it doesn’t get any easier to put space between the research and the human connection. Listening to a life story is a profoundly intimate experience, and the knowledge that I will likely never know the ending to their stories as well as being unable to offer any tangible, concrete assistance to them, makes it difficult to just walk out the door when the interview is over.”
