PUBPOL 290S-04: Social Entrepreneurship and the Arts
Spring 2020
Instructor: Katie Wyatt
This course will train interested students in creative social entrepreneurship, allowing students to explore their innovative idea in the arts and social change. Coursework will include exercises and readings in personal leadership development, developing skills in social entrepreneurship, nonprofit management, fundraising, community organizing and impact evaluation. The end project will be a complete business plan and presentation deck for your innovative idea in the arts and social change. With permission, this course can be applied as an elective to the Certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Past students in this course have launched successful social ventures in the arts. For example, Samantha Giugliano ’16 and Lynn Zhang ’16 launched their final project, Harmonies for Health, into reality. Harmonies for Health is a pop-up choral and music training program for long-term patients at the Ronald McDonald House of Durham. Also, based on his preparatory work in this course, Jason Steinberg ’17 launched the International Sports and Music Project, an international NGO building youth music and sports programs in refugee camps in Syria, Rwanda and Greece.
