ENERGY 790-02: Renewables and the World's Poor

Fall 2018

Instructor: Tim Profeta, Jim Rogers

About 1.2 billion people do not have access to electricity. Their ability to be lifted from poverty is severely constrained by this fact. The objective of this class will be to define the solutions that can provide electricity to these 1.2 billion people without exacerbating the daunting challenge of climate change. For the people without access today, these solutions should enable a stairstep path out of poverty, with the ultimate objective of positioning them to compete in the 21st century. Working with Jim Rogers, former CEO of Duke Energy, and Nicholas Institute Director Tim Profeta, students from various schools and disciplines will explore the logic behind different technological options, the public policy approaches that underpin action, and financing approaches and challenges. Working in groups, students will develop a business plan to create a nonprofit or limited liability corporation that would deploy power generating technologies in a targeted area of the world.
