Reproductive Health Care Post-Roe (2024-2025)

Duke University Hospital’s location in one of the few southern states without a near-total abortion ban, coupled with its private institutional status, offers a unique vantage point for examining reproductive healthcare access in the post-Roe era. Building on the work of a previous team, this year’s project focused on expanding the Reproductive Care Provider Archive, documenting media coverage, and conducting oral history interviews with nurses, clinic managers and other key staff involved in reproductive care in the Southeast. The team also worked to refine protocols for storing and sharing sensitive materials and developed public-facing media, including a podcast, website updates and social media content, to increase public understanding of the issue.

Over the 2024-2025 academic year, the team, which included 17 undergraduates, two graduate students and five team leads, added 36 new interviews to the archive and 92 new clips to the website, while maintaining rigorous security protocols. They also completed two data-driven projects: a content analysis of reproductive health service listings on North Carolina Universities’ student health websites and a “secret shopper” survey on the availability of emergency contraception and over-the-counter birth control. These efforts significantly expanded both the depth and accessibility of the archive’s resources.

Outreach was a major success for the team this year. Leaders launched a podcast on Apple and Spotify, students published 10 newsletter issues, and members presented findings at the Society for Family Planning conference, the Duke Women’s Health Symposium, and the MaryAnn Black Distinguished Health Equity Symposium. The team also organized a ThinkGlobal Panel at the Duke Global Health Institute and prepared to host a keynote at the Association of Southern Women’s Historians. A Bryan Center Tabling event capped the semester, allowing students to share findings with the broader Duke community and hone their skills in communicating complex research to diverse audiences.
