Public Communications for Scholars: A Workshop for Bass Connections Team Leaders

Tuesday, February 12, 2019 - 9:00am to 11:00am

Duke’s Office of University Communications is offering a workshop tailored to Bass Connections team leaders.

Bass Connections project team leaders from any year are welcome to sign up. Team leaders can also designate a project manager or other representative to attend. (University-wide institutes, initiatives and centers are also welcome.)

Participants will learn how to partner with Duke communicators to publicize findings, provide contextual expertise and share scholarly work with nonacademic audiences. Particular emphasis will be placed on effectively promoting scholarship through opinion articles, commentary and essays, as well as reviewing ways to be more visible in the media and preparing for interviews and other engagement with reporters.

Workshop leaders are Karl Bates, Director of Research Communications; Laura Brinn, Assistant Vice President for News and Global Communications; and Keith Lawrence, Executive Director of News and Communications.

Anna Gassman-Pines, WLF Bass Connections Associate Professor of Public Policy and Psychology & Neuroscience (and Bass Connections theme leader for Education & Human Development), will be on hand to talk about her recent experience engaging with external media outlets.

A light breakfast will be provided. Space is limited; RSVP to Sarah Dwyer (sarah.dwyer@duke.edu), Director of Communications for Interdisciplinary Studies, by February 8.
