How Should Police Interact with the Mentally Ill?

Nicole Schramm-Sapyta and Zachary Smothers wrote an opinion piece for The Hill about the U.S Department of Justice’s new toolkit to help law enforcement officers deal with mentally ill individuals.

“It couldn’t arrive at a more opportune time, given the number of shootings involving police and mentally ill people and the fact that so many of our mentally ill citizens are now warehoused in prisons,” they write.

Schramm-Sapyta is a visiting assistant professor at the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences and a team leader of the Bass Connections project team Stemming the Opiate Epidemic through Education and Outreach. Smothers is a graduate of Duke’s Master of Biomedical Sciences program and project manager for the opiate epidemic team. He’s also a member of the Bass Connections Student Advisory Council.
