Apply to Become a Member of the 2019-2020 Bass Connections Student Advisory Council

September 16, 2019

Apply now.

We are accepting applications for the Bass Connections Student Advisory Council (SAC) through September 29.

Eligibility

The SAC serves as a sounding board for student ideas, questions and suggestions relating to Bass Connections and interdisciplinary education at Duke. Duke students of all levels and programs, including undergraduates and graduate/professional students, are eligible for this opportunity.

All applicants must be current or former members of a year-long Bass Connections project team, participants in an affiliated course and/or participants in a Bass Connections summer program (Data+, Story+, Summer Neuroscience, Global Health Student Research Training). Prospective members must demonstrate a deep interest in working collaboratively on interdisciplinary teams to address societal challenges.

In 2019-2020, the SAC will meet two times in the fall and three times in the spring. To be eligible to apply, students must be able to attend the first council meeting on Friday, October 18, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in Allen 103A. Lunch will be provided.

Key Tasks for 2019-2020 Council Members

SAC members serve as a vital source of new ideas and feedback for Bass Connections and often work together in small groups on particular questions or issues. In addition to weighing in on important issues, members of the 2019-2020 SAC will choose to participate in one of two working groups:

  • Program Evaluation: This working group will prepare and lead student focus groups geared toward learning more about student experiences on year-long project teams and developing recommendations for ensuring positive experiences for all student participants.
  • Communications: This working group will plan and create publishable content (interviews, student/alumni stories, works-in-progress updates, etc.) for a pilot version of a Bass Connections-oriented student research blog.

Students will have the chance to specify which working group interests them in their application.

Members of the SAC also serve as ambassadors for Bass Connections by participating in special events and representing the program in a variety of contexts, such as at student orientations, the Bass Connections Fair, Blue Devil Days and the year-end Bass Connections Showcase. SAC members will be asked to sign up to serve at these events during council meetings.
